Matthew, Morgan set to defend at this weekend’s Woodford Legends Invitational

(June 5, 2025 – VERSAILLES, KY)  — It’s nice to remember a big win, even nicer to be remembered.

Before the first tee shot is struck in any golf tournament, all eyes are typically on the defending champions who topped the field in the previous playing and consequently held bragging rights all year round.

This weekend’s 3rd annual Woodford Legends Invitational welcomes back the prevailing team from the 2024 event, Catriona Matthew of Scotland and Becky Morgan of South Wales, who posted back-to-back rounds of 59 in last year’s two-day, two-person scramble to enter the winner’s circle and capture the hardware.

“It’s a great feeling,” says Matthew, a four-time winner on the LPGA Tour with a total of 11 professional wins worldwide. “You’re coming back to a course that you’ve obviously played well on and you’ve got good memories on.”

The 2009 AIG Women’s Open Champion — a major championship in women’s professional golf — Matthew has appeared in nine Solheim Cup competitions and served as Captain of the European squad in 2019 and 2021, winning both contests.

“It doesn’t feel like a year has gone by when you come back here,” adds Matthew. “We had great fun playing in this event, and it’s good to see everyone again.”

Morgan agrees.

“We started e-mailing and texting each other probably four or five months ago about coming back to defend here,” says Morgan, a winner on the Ladies European Tour who also competed on the LPGA Tour from 2001-2022.

“We booked our flights really early, so yeah, we’re ready and we’re excited,” smiles Morgan.

The Woodford Legends Invitational’s opening round is set for Saturday, June 7 with the final round being played on Sunday, June 8.  Fifteen two-person Legends teams will compete in a scramble format that invites creative shot-making and may also inspire a little more risk-taking, but Morgan and Matthew are simply looking for more of their same magic from last year.

“I’m just going to rely on Beanie’s putter again,” says Morgan. “So, it’s going to be great. I mean we had a pair of 59’s last year. We’re kind of hoping that will continue.”

“That’s a good number,” notes Matthew. “You just have to go out there and give yourself a birdie putt on every hole. We both putted well last year. That’s what it all comes down to.”

The pair will look to once again best a power-packed field that features five LPGA & World Golf Hall of Famers, 14 major championship title holders and several teams who have previously won Legends team events, including newcomer Angela Stanford, the 2026 Solheim Cup Captain who is teaming up with Wendy Ward once again in search of back-to-back team event wins on the Legends circuit.

In keeping with a tradition started at last year’s event, five teams made up of top area female amateurs will play alongside the Legends of the LPGA for both rounds and compete in a separate division.

Tee times start at 10:00 a.m. both days. Parking is adjacent to the clubhouse within walking distance.  Shuttles will also be available.
