Angela Stanford, Wendy Ward look to continue their winning ways at The Woodford Legends Invitational

(June 3, 2025 – VERSAILLES, KY)  — Angela Stanford and Wendy Ward are hoping for a little déjà vu this weekend at the Woodford Legends Invitational powered by Suran Systems.

Not exactly the same place or the same time, but definitely the same result as they partner up once again to take on their Legends peers in a 36-hole team event at The Woodford Club this Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8.  The pair combined to win a Legends team event last fall in their debut appearance as teammates on the LPGA’s senior circuit.

“I love team events,” says Ward, 52, a four-time winner on the LPGA Tour who first met Stanford at the 2003 Solheim Cup, where they were teammates but were never paired together.  “Golf is usually such an individual game, but when you pair up with a partner it elevates the competitiveness, and the fun meter. Everything means more – and if you win, you get to celebrate it twice as big!”

Stanford, 47, a seven-time LPGA Tour champion with one major championship title who played in six Solheim Cup competitions, agrees.

“I truly enjoy team events, and I’ve heard amazing things about this one,” says Stanford. “I’ve never been to this specific part of Kentucky, so I’m excited for a new experience.”

Ward, who played in last year’s Woodford Legends Invitational with Pat Hurst, will happily show Stanford the way. Hurst, a six-time LPGA Tour winner is reconnecting with longtime teammate Juli Inkster, an LPGA & World Golf Hall of Fame member with 31 LPGA titles who was unable to appear in the 2024 tournament.

Says Ward, “Angela is a bit younger and stronger than me so in the scramble format, it’s fun for me to go first and put something in play and then see her let one rip.”

Angela Stanford and Wendy Ward teamed up to win the 2024 BJ’s Charity Championship last fall.

The Legends teams will make their way around The Woodford Club in a two-person best ball format for the opening round; Sunday’s final round will be a two-person scramble.  In 2024, both rounds were played as a scramble with Catriona Matthew of Scotland and Becky Morgan of South Wales coming out on top at 26 under par.

“I think having best ball and scramble is the best of both worlds,” notes Stanford, who was recently named the 2026 Solheim Cup Captain for Team USA. “With best ball, you can play your own game, and the scramble format allows us to be more creative and take more risks.”

The Woodford Club is a par 71 golf course that opens with a straightforward par 5, presenting a quick scoring opportunity right out of the gate.  Seven straight par 4’s complete the front 9 while the back 9 starts with a gettable par 5 but then challenges players with a mix of lengthy par 4’s and tricky par 3’s, one of which is over water.  The par 5 17th offers one last hope for birdie or better before taking on the challenging par 4 18th.

“The Woodford course is a fun layout,” says Ward, who won the 1994 U.S. Women’s Amateur and went on to compete on the LPGA Tour from 1996-2015. “Some risk reward holes like the last hole could be very exciting coming down the home stretch.”

Similar to when they paired up to win last fall’s Legends team event at The Ridge Club in Sandwich, Mass., Ward has previously seen and competed on the golf course; Stanford has not. Her first look will be in Thursday’s practice round.

“I appreciate that Wendy can help me navigate the course,” says Stanford. “Wendy is laid back, enjoys the game, and loves to have fun. She is a great partner to have out there.”

Will the stars align again for team Stanford-Ward?

”Stanford is so competitive,” chuckles Ward. “She does not like to lose. She’s all in whether she’s playing individually or as a partner. We pair up well together. We kind of do our own thing yet complement one another with our styles of play. It should be a great week at the Woodford Invitational with great fans and a fun track.”

In keeping with a tradition started at last year’s event, five teams made up of top area female amateurs will play alongside the Legends of the LPGA for both rounds and compete in a separate division.

Tee times start at 10:00 a.m. both days. Parking is adjacent to the clubhouse within walking distance.  Shuttles will also be available.
