Ward, Stanford Successfully Defend at the BJ’s Charity Championship

(SANDWICH, MASS. – September 5, 2025) – The BJ’s Charity Championship presented by Kimberly-Clark delivered once again with incredible shot-making and fun fan interaction as the LPGA Legends made their 8th appearance at The Ridge Club today in a two-person, 18-hole scramble event.

Defending champions Wendy Ward and Angela Stanford became the first back-to-back winners of this unique team event, combining for a 14-under-par score of 57 that included two eagles in the final four holes.

Stanford and Ward rode six consecutive birdies on the front to put themselves in the hunt, but stalled a little making the turn, unable to move off six under par until a birdie at the par 5 12th reignited the flame. Following another birdie on 14, Stanford chipped in for eagle on the par 15th.

“It just looked like one of those that you could make, and it was uphill,” says Stanford. “Wendy hit a good one in front of me, and I knew we had the birdie, so I’m like, just go get it.” The pair quickly dropped to 10 under par, grabbing a share of the lead with three holes to play.

Playing three groups ahead of Stanford and Ward, Alicia Dibos and Liselotte Neumann got it to 10 under par with birdies on 15, 16, and 17. On the challenging 18th hole, a par five with a risk reward approach over a lengthy water feature, Dibos’s second shot found the water and Neumann’s sailed over the green into the bunker. It looked grim for the scrambling twosome, until Neumann blasted out of the sand and one-hopped it into the cup for a brilliant eagle at the finish.

“I caught it absolutely perfect,” says Neumann. “It flew much higher than I normally hit my bunker shot and just landed about a foot from the hole and then hopped in.”

“It was the perfect shot,” smiles Dibos.

Suddenly, Dibos and Neumann had the clubhouse lead at 12 under.

Meanwhile, the defending champs were keeping their hopes alive as Ward sank birdie putts set up by Stanford’s solid iron play on 16 and 17 to get the pair to 12 under par heading into the storied finishing hole.

All Neumann and Dibos could do was wait — and watch.

Ward and Stanford needed only one more birdie at the last to successfully defend. Ward’s beautifully struck iron from the fairway soared over the water and landed softly on the green, rolling to about four feet for eagle. When the pair’s putt dropped, it gave them a record 14 under par finish and their second consecutive BJ’s Charity Championship title.

“It’s hard to defend,” says Stanford. “Everybody’s in it, especially at this event. We played with Juli and Pat, and right out of the gate, they were lighting it up.”

Juli Inkster and Pat Hurst dropped birdie putts on three of their first four holes.

“Juli had her game face on for sure,” agrees Ward.

“I think that helped us because you know, you’ve got these two horses and you’re just trying to keep up,” adds Stanford. “We made par on the first hole, but after that we got it going.”

Ward and Stanford are the first team to successfully defend at the BJ’s Charity Championship. Their score of 14 under par bested last year’s winning effort by three shots and was especially impressive given the gusty conditions.

“When people don’t play in the wind very often, they don’t really know what to expect,” notes Stanford, a native Texan who, like Ward, is accustomed to playing in the wind. “I think it can be an advantage because we know how our games work in the wind.”

Winning back-to-back is a first for Ward, and she was thrilled to seal the deal with her short eagle putt on 18.

“I always like those shorter ones that you just see a line, and you just want to make it,” says Ward. “You feel the crowd’s energy, and you think, let’s just put this in.”

Neumann and Dibos settled for solo 2nd, their highest finish at the Ridge to date.

“It was a great day for us,” smiles Neumann, “We came up a little short, but overall, we’re super happy.”
