Matthew, Morgan set to defend (again) at The Woodford Legends Invitational

(August 5, 2026 – LEXINGTON, KY.) – The Woodford Legends Invitational barrel head trophy is about 22 inches in diameter, 1 inch thick, and weighs roughly 12 pounds.

Scotland’s Catriona Matthew and Becky Morgan of South Wales are the keepers of two of these “one-of-a-kind” trophies apiece, thanks to besting their LPGA Legends peers at The Woodford Club in 2024 and 2025 Woodford Legends Invitationals.

In fact, no other Legend has hoisted the signature disc thus far – and Morgan and Matthew wouldn’t mind keeping it that way.

The third full-field staging of the 2026 Woodford Legends Invitational is set for this weekend, Saturday and Sunday August 8-9 at The Woodford Club in Versailles, Ky.

“It would be amazing to win for a third time,” says Matthew, a four-time LPGA Tour champion and Solheim Cup stalwart who led the Euros to victory as captain in 2019 and 2021.

Morgan, the 2025 U.S. Senior Women’s Open Champion, agrees, but knows it’s a tall order given the incredible depth of the field.

“We would love to do the three-peat,” says Morgan. “That is definitely the goal, but we also appreciate there are some really good teams playing this year.”

Becky Morgan and Catriona Matthew were paired with the team of Juli Inkster and Pat Hurst in last year’s opening round.

Players in this year’s field have combined for 322 wins on the LPGA Tour, including 42 major championship titles. Six LPGA and World Golf Hall of Famers are set to appear – Pat Bradley, Laura Davies, Juli Inkster, Annika Sörenstam, Hollis Stacy and Jan Stephenson. Going two-for-two against some of the greatest names in the history of women’s golf is no small task, especially given this is the only event Matthew and Morgan have ever played in as a team.

“We gel really well and have a great time playing together,” notes Morgan. “Our games are quite similar so it’s easy to help each other.”

The twosome twice posted 26 under par in 2024 and 2025 to find the winner’s circle in this 36-hole scramble, clearing the field by three shots the first year and two shots last year.

“I think we just love the format and the course suits us in being quite tight off the tee and then a lot of short irons into the greens,” says Matthew. The pair fired a final round 57 on the par 71 track for the win – matching the course record for the tournament.

“The course is very similar to something we’d see at home, so we are very comfortable on it,” says Morgan who appreciates Matthew’s calm and supportive presence out on the course. “We seem to read the greens really well together, too.”

The talented duo approaches every putt in the same manner, studying it collectively and then having Matthew putt first.

“Becky is the better putter,” says Matthew. “She gets a look at the line.”

In 72 holes played competitively at The Woodford Club to date, Morgan and Matthew have carded 48 birdies and 2 eagles alongside 22 pars. It’s doubtful anything will change strategically in this year’s contest come Saturday’s opening round.

If the putts continue to fall at the same pace, that elusive three-peat is certainly within reach.

“It’s always fun to return to a course you have won on,” smiles Matthew. “We can definitely make room for another barrel head.”

Gates open at 8:30 a.m. both days, with tee times starting at 10:00 a.m. As in previous stagings, six two-person teams made up of Kentucky’s top female amateurs will play alongside the Legends in a separate division. All proceeds benefit charity partner KVC Kentucky.

Saturday’s round is Family Day featuring family and youth activities including Kwik Golf, Golfzilla and face painting. The first 100 kids through the gate will receive a free hat. Sunday’s round is Military and First Responder’s Day – free admission to all active military and first responders with ID. Vendor booths and free skincare screenings courtesy of Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield will be available adjacent to the practice green both days.
