It’s the same story but a different chapter at the 2025 LPGA Legends Championship.
In 2024, LPGA Tour superstar Cristie Kerr found herself leading after 18 holes, but she dropped to second during round two and ultimately stayed there while Angela Stanford went on to defend her LPGA Legends Championship title.
But the 2025 playing has seen a shift, as Kerr was in a share of second after the opening round and now leads the field after 36 holes in Hurricane, Utah.
The 47-year-old’s 1-under 71 was just enough to give her the edge over the other 74 players, who generally struggled at Copper Rock Golf Course with Friday’s windy conditions. Her scorecard was on the tamer side, as Kerr carded four birdies and three bogeys.
Three of those birdies came on the first, eighth and 13th holes, with two of her bogeys being posted on holes two and 10. And after an unfortunate final bogey on the par-3 17th hole, Kerr celebrated a birdie on the par-4 18th with a fist bump and roar of the crowd.
“I made a bad bogey on the 17th hole with a pitching wedge into the green. Got kind of a bad lie in the rough, and I was mad about that,” said Kerr. “Hit the best shot of the day off the tee on 18, and got in a hole in the rough, and made an unreal birdie. So, it’s gonna make dinner taste really, really good tonight.”
On top of her unfinished business from last year, the Scottsdale, Ariz. native has a little bit more to play for during Saturday’s final round.
“It would mean the world (to win),” said Kerr. “Tomorrow is my husband’s 60th birthday, so it would be a great birthday present.”
But before she can hoist her first trophy on the Legends of the LPGA, she’ll need to fight off the athletes behind her, including Heather Bowie Young, Giulia Sergas and Leta Lindley, who sit in a tie for second at 2-under.
Bowie Young was the only athlete of that trio to shoot under par, rolling in two birdies and one bogey for a 1-under 71. But the solid round today does not mean much heading into Championship Saturday, and knowing that, the 50-year-old will rely on what she knows to propel her up the leaderboard and into the winner’s circle come the end of the final round.
“Every day is its own day,” said Bowie Young. “Tomorrow, I still have to have good routines and hit my lines, and if I do, I’ll be fine. If I don’t have good routines, then I’ll struggle, so that’s really my focus. That doesn’t really need momentum. That just needs me to stay in my head.”
Kerr, Bowie Young and Sergas will be the final group off Copper Rock Golf Course on Saturday at 11:12 a.m. local time.
