The field is set for the
2010 Handa Cup to be held
September 2 – 5, 2010 at Wentworth By The Sea Country Club.
Five-time U.S Captain
Kathy Whitworth and three-time World Team
Captain
Cathy Panton Lewis will lead teams of twelve into Handa
Cup team and singles matches played similarly to the
Solheim
Cup. LPGA legendary stars
Nancy Lopez and
Helen Alfredsson will
make their debut appearances for the U.S. and World sides,
respectively.
The team roster announcements came today at a press conference
at
Wentworth By The Sea Country Club in Rye, NH. Additionally,
Hannaford
Supermarkets and
Kraft Foods were announced as Handa Cup
presenting sponsors. A new logo and event title, “Handa Cup
presented by Hannaford and Kraft” premiered during the press
conference.
Appearing at the press conference were Legends Tour CEO and
Portsmouth native
Jane Blalock; Nashua native and LPGA Hall of
Famer
Pat Bradley; Beth Newlands Campbell, president of
Hannaford Supermarkets and Joan Marchessault, President of the
Board of
The First Tee of New Hampshire, the Handa Cup’s
charitable partner.
“Hannaford is proud to participate in bringing the Handa Cup to
New Hampshire,” Newlands Campbell said. “The Legends Tour is
world-class both in showcasing the most talented women golfers
of all time and in contributing to communities through its
charitable initiatives.”
Jane Blalock added, “We are so pleased to have Hannaford
Supermarkets and Kraft present the Handa Cup this year. As this
is the first year for the tournament in New England, it is
fitting that a community partner with ties to this region for
more than 125 years is part of the event. And, our field
proudly boasts several past champions of the
Kraft Nabisco
Championship – Lopez, Bradley, Alcott, Little,
Alfredsson and Sheehan have all won that event in years past. It’s a perfect fit.”
Blalock also announced that New Hampshire Senator and Mrs. Judd
Gregg will serve as honorary co-chairs of the Handa Cup.
With over 400 LPGA Tour wins and 39 major victories, the 2010
Handa Cup field is a “who’s who” of golf legends. Both 2011
Solheim Cup Captains,
Rosie Jones and
Alison Nicholas, will be
teeing it up for their respective teams. US Team Handa Cup
rookies include Hall of Famer
Nancy Lopez, Legends Tour Open
Championship winner
Sherri Steinhauer and LPGA superstar
Meg
Mallon. The World Team rookies include Solheim Cup veteran
Helen Alfredsson, Aussie
Jane Crafter and Canadian fan favorite
Lorie Kane.

Tournament week will kick off with the Official Handa Cup Pro-Am
on Thursday, September 2 with a 1:00 p.m. shotgun. The Opening
Ceremony will be held that Thursday evening. Clinics and
practice rounds are scheduled for Friday, September 3 with the
Handa Cup team matches beginning Saturday morning, September 4.
Singles matches will start at 9:00 a.m. Sunday, September 5 and
the Closing Ceremony and trophy presentation will immediately
follow play once a winner is determined.
The
Handa Cup, an
International Sports Marketing Society (ISPS)
Series Event, is title sponsored by Haruhisa Handa, a Japanese
philanthropist, artist and businessman who founded the ISPS in
2006.
